Ornamental grasses lend striking form, gentle movement and a long season of interest to the garden. Grasses can effectively complement any architecture. Picture sleek, vertical columns of Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’ against the hard, flat exterior of a modern home. Or, the lush, rounded silhouettes of Pennisetum alopecuroides softening the edges of a pebbled, cottage garden walkway. The range of forms and textures among species suggests many different uses of grasses in the garden – from a stately single specimen of Miscanthus punctuating the end of a bed to a front-of-border sweep of silver-blue Festuca. Grasses correctly placed have an almost mystical ability to make any garden more interesting and worthy of further exploration. Fog, light and breezes captured by grasses can bring animation, emotion and natural beauty to any landscape.
Ornamental grasses are extremely versatile. Tall species, for instance, are commonly used as screening to hide unsightly objects. But, when used in small groups or as specimen, they are equally strong at drawing the eye to desired focal points. Likewise, grasses with fine textured foliage can be seamlessly woven into garden beds to help lend rhythm and harmony to the site. Or, they can be used to delineate spaces when a change of color or theme arises.
Ornamental grasses are the perfect companions for low maintenance gardens. In fact, they are nearly bullet-proof, requiring only a simple annual cut-back and perhaps a division years down the line if they begin to lose vigor in the center (like other perennials). Grasses will require supplemental watering their first season, but once established, will only need watering during times of real drought. Grasses are very environmentally friendly, not only in their water-wise ways, but in their dislike of chemical fertilizer. They are also disease and pest-resistant.
